Found in the Pilbara region is Karijini National Park which along with the Ningaloo Reef represent the adventure capital of Western Australia halfway between Perth and Broome.

Karijini NP is the second largest national park in WA coming in at around 6200 square kilometres…can’t imagine the size? just think massive!.

The part of interest to most adventure travellers and backpackers is in a relatively small area based around a series of gorges formed through erosion over millions of years these include Hancock, Weano, Joffre, Knox, Dales, Kalamina and Red gorges.

Karijini is one of the hottest must see destinations for backpackers…why?
It is full of adventure with plenty of chances to get up face to face with nature, climbing, scrambling and swimming through narrow gorges and rock pools.

At night the stars open up and the astronomy tour based out of the Ecoretreat is a little whacky seriously interesting and well worth it.

Spend some time at any number of magical places including Fern, Circular, and Kermits Pool (just to name a few) along with any number of waterfalls and ancient rock formations including Fortescue Falls and others.

At Karijini national park there is a minimum of pine log fencing and safety rails which makes a great change to many attractions, you get to go into some crazy places and see amazing things!

The down side or caution is…. it is inherently more dangerous than “walking on the beach” and injury through falling or goofing off can result in many hours of pain until the SES can arrive from Tom Price.

Our tip: Read the signs and seek out advice before heading off, help keep it from needing to be “over managed” by not getting into trouble!
Better still go with a tour and get looked after better than you can do yourself.

The walks are well signposted without being intrusive and the maps available from the visitor centre are well worth it and there are a lot of special places which only the locals and some tour guides might know
